Fun little video, right?

For the past 7+ years, Yellow Rose has been on a mission. The mission involved improving the health and wellness of 10,000 people in Houston, and a bunch of other metrics that didn’t really matter. I mean, what happens if you’re the 10,001 person to join Yellow Rose? Are we just going to stop trying?

So we sat down and thought about what it is we actually do. Sure, we help people get really healthy, but we do so much more than that.

We build confidence.

We teach and empower.

We challenge people and build resilience.

We provide a community of support.

We provide a place of belonging.

We truly help people become happier.

And seeing it all come down to us helping people be happier has made us rethink and take a new direction with our mission.

Plus, we had to officially give the nod to Texas.

The Yellow Rose is an homage to the heroine of Texas independence. Did you know one of the early lines in the Texas Declaration of Independence of 1836 explicitly calls one of the foundational pillars of our independence “the advancement of happiness”? By definition, ‘happy’ means a feeling of pleasure or contentment. How often do you hear people use “happy” when describing a gym?

But what IS “advancing happy?” What does it mean?

“Advancing Happy” in the context of health and fitness encompasses a holistic approach, yet understands the need for modern conveniences and does not demonize you for that. Our approach to wellness prioritizes both physical and mental well-being. It involves recognizing that true happiness and fulfillment come from nurturing all aspects of one’s health, including physical fitness, nutrition, social health/community, and emotional/mental health.

It’s not a generic look. It’s not a constant weight loss goal. It’s not beating you over the head with “discipline.” It’s certainly not what most gyms are going to show as the pinnacle of health in an industry that seems to only be driven by aesthetics and fear mongering.

…Because we’ve seen the classic examples the fitness industry wants to show you as “pinnacle of health.” Turns out it’s not super healthy or happy.

Your happy is remarkably unique, but we have some thoughts on how we’ll help you advance your happy.

Physically, advancing happy means improving or maintaining overall health and fitness levels through consistent strength training, cardio, and mobility work. It’s about setting achievable fitness goals that promote vitality, strength, and longevity, while also recognizing the importance of rest and learning how to properly listen to your body. We call it, Happy Training.

In terms of nutrition and nourishment, advancing happy involves adopting a balanced and sustainable approach to eating that gets quality nutrients to the body, promotes overall well-being, and nourishes the soul. This includes consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods, staying hydrated, and enjoying meals in a mindful and pleasurable manner. Nothing is off limits as long as we know and understand the give and take and the natural checks and balances of life. We call it, Happy Eating.

And advancing happy goes beyond just physical health—it also encompasses mental and emotional wellness. We aim to reduce stress, prioritize self-care activities that bring joy and relaxation, and foster positive relationships and social connections with others that have your shared journey and struggles. We understand and acknowledge that happiness is not a constant feeling you can have, and it’s important to embrace and feel the down times. However, consistently engaging in practices that contribute to your happiness will help keep the rolling average of your happiness on an upward trajectory. We call it, Happy Purpose.

Ultimately, advancing happy is about taking proactive steps to enhance all aspects of one’s health and fitness, with the understanding that a strong body, a nourished mind, and a fulfilled spirit are essential components of overall well-being and happiness. It’s about being a support system for you and helping you live that amazing life of happiness and contentment.

 It’s about embracing a lifestyle that promotes vitality, resilience,  joy, and empowering individuals to live their best lives to the fullest.

It’s about tuning out what you think you “should” do, and truly listen to what your body, mind, and soul need you to do.
