Word of the Week – GRIT

Word of the Week: GRIT

by Clark Hibbs

GRIT is defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

Grit is one of my favorite words/personality traits. It is such a positive, yet aggressive sounding word. It carries weight and metaphorical “oomf” behind it. When you talk to someone who has grit, you instantly know it. There is a subtle fire in their eyes, determination and action behind their words, and an unrelenting desire to do whatever it takes to reach that goal.

That perseverance and passion is INFECTIOUS. If you can surround yourself with those who have grit, I highly suggest you do so.

To shamelessly steal from everyone’s favorite and trusted source, Wikipedia…

“Building upon biographical collections of famous leaders in history, researchers and scientists have reached similar conclusions about high achieving individuals. Specifically, those individuals who were deemed more successful and influential than their contemporary counterparts typically possessed traits above and beyond that of normal ability. While ability was still critically important, these individuals also possessed “zeal” and “persistence of motive and effort.”

Seems like having grit gets you where you want to be.

Grit is something that I feel we are losing in society as a whole, while pockets of resistance to mediocrity continue to rise to the surface. While society as a whole looks for instant gratification, quick fixes, and anything that is going to make you feel good in the moment… there is a pocket of resistance that is pushing back from these norms. The pocket of resistance knows that the small, tedious, and unrelenting hard work is what will pay off in the end. After all, the pocket of resistance has the grit and conscious thought to understand that small tweaks lead to big changes.
Have grit, my friends. Have the zeal and persistence and passion to reach your goals. Don’t get sucked into mediocrity. Have the grit to push beyond the present to see what your future could hold.
