Each week, we’re going to highlight one of our amazing members here at CrossFit Yellow Rose. Our members all have some pretty incredible stories to tell, and we want to share them with the world!
For this edition of the spotlight, we called on one of our staple 4:30PM-ers, Mark! Mark has been working out with us since the early days of CrossFit Yellow Rose and has made some awesome progress along the way. Here’s our quick Q&A with Mark!
So Mark, tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? Are you a parent? What are your hobbies? Anything unique about your life you want to share? (etc etc)
I’m from a small town in central Texas but have been in Houston since 1998. I played a little football in college so I have a bit of a competitive nature. My wife and I have a 10 year old son (Travis) and a 6 year old daughter (Tatum). When I am not working in the oil and gas industry, I like to woodwork as a hobby, coach my son’s baseball and football teams, and generally hang out with my wife and kids.
I am one of the oldest in the gym but I don’t let that stop me, even though the Yellow Rose coaches tell me to take it easy from time to time (what can I say… Football player mentality!). My wife is a solid cross-fitter and was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s been tough but the support from Yellow Rose and its members has been incredible. It truly is a family atmosphere with the absolute best coaching available. I have been to other boxes and to me, nothing compares.
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in 2014. I ran a lot but was getting really bored with the same old routine. Finding CrossFit helped me get excited about exercise again.
How has life improved?
Exponentially. I love the community and support that CrossFit gives you, and I also like being able to be competitive with myself in some of the workouts. It helps me push myself, and I’m in the best shape of my life because of it!
What do you love most about Yellow Rose?
Coaching. I learned more in the first month at Yellow Rose than I did in the 3 years prior. Every class there’s a great coach helping you get better and keeping you safe.
What would you tell someone on the fence about starting CrossFit?
Jump in! You will receive the training you need to do it the right way, and there is no pressure at Yellow Rose. We’re just a bunch of people trying to get in shape.
Thank you, Mark, and thank you for being such an awesome part of our community!
